Information Management is a huge subject, which covers the collecting and processing of all data electronically and on paper. There are a number of Acts which govern how we use, process and share data such as the Data Protection Act 1998(DPA) for personal data, the Freedom of Information Act 2000(FOI) on how information is processed and there is also the Environment Information Regulations Act (EIR) for everything to do with the environment .
We have all heard on the news or in the papers of a number of cases where personal information has been lost or wrongfully disclosed, either by losing the disks or having laptops stolen. When these incidents are reported people wonder how secure their own data is. It also makes staff ask what can they do to ensure the information they handle on a daily basis is protected, and are they complying with the law.
There are many places you can go to get information and guidance, but this usually means scrolling through pages, long lists and a lot of information before you find what you want to know.
On this site, we hope to answer as many questions and queries as is possible without making it too difficult to find the information. Under each section you will find a download area, which will hold any relevant documents for that subject from the Information Commissioner's Office, BECTA and any other source.
