Welcome to the Somerset County Council External Visits and Outdoor Education Guidance web site

The use of external visits and outdoor education has long been identified as a vehicle to positive development. Such activities are actively promoted in order that every young person should have the opportunity to experience them.

This website is for Somerset County Council employees. The information contained within this website replaces SCC Volume 5 and all the associated SV forms.

All SCC Schools/Organisations are reminded to refer to the External Visit Coordinator (EVC) Register to ensure that they have an in date,  trained/certificated member of staff in place. If a staff member listed on the register is no longer in the EVC role and they need to be removed from the register schools/organisations are requested to contact the CHSU office (oea@somerset.gov.uk or 01823 355089) The register can be viewed within this web site and training where required can be accommodated (see next dates for training are shown at the foot of this page).

The guidance, support and training which is available enables all staff and group members to engage in high quality external visits. This site  serves to promote the benefits of trips, visits and activities which take participants out of their normal environment.

Effective from the new academic year (September 2011) the advice in addition to this website and all external visit applications will be processed by Health & Safety staff representatives based within the Health & Safety Department of County Hall - staff are there to accommodate routine requests. Any higher level/specialist guidance required will be forwarded on to the Outdoor Education Technical Adviser.

Please note that all reference within this guidance web site to the OEA Office should now be addressed to the CHSU (County Health & Safety Unit).

A wide range of training courses are available to enable and develop staff. These can be viewed along with all other information contained on the site by using the navigation menu on the left of the screen. To further assist you there is a keyword search facility found at the top left hand margin. If you are experiencing any difficulty obtaining a booking form for any of the events available please contact bookings@positiveventure.co.uk
